New security system

A new RSA security system has replaced Todos authentication tokens and the optional SMS login for Corporate Online Banking. If you have not already obtained and activated a RSA authentication token we urge you to do so as soon as possible.

Greater security

The system combines risk analysis and use of authentication tokens with the aim of maximising security and preventing fraud.

Two ways of generating an authentication code

Landsbankinn offers two ways of generating an authentication code to sign in, using either an app or a plastic authentication token. The app and the authentication token can be used alternately, depending on which suits the occasion better.

Risk analysis

The security system learns to recognise the behaviour and situation of each individual customer and monitors deviations from usual practice. In most cases customers will not even notice the system in operation, but it responds if actions deviate from normal practice.

The design and navigation system of Corporate Online Banking has been updated but all the actions and statements are still in place. The new interface offers a number of advantages facilitating access to information and in addition is better suited to tablet computers.

Kynning á breytingum

This short video describes the interface of Corporate Online Banking and explains its structure. It shows the main actions of the navigation system, how shortcuts can be created and other details.

New navigation system

Click on the arrows at the right edge of each web branch to move through the web tree. That way you can find the relevant page without having to load each page you click on.

Searching the web tree

To find specific parts of Online Banking, enter the name of the page or action you request. The branches of the web tree grow fewer as you enter your request.

Spaces in tables

The size of spaces in tables of Online Banking can be increased or decreased. By using smaller spaces you can see more information on your screen while larger spaces can be easier to read.

Shortcuts

You can create shortcuts simply by dragging a page from the web tree to the box for this purpose which appears on the upper right of the web. To remove shortcuts just drag them from the shortcut list to the rubbish bin.

Well suited for tablets

Online Banking adapts to whatever device is used for access, which makes it easier to use on a tablet computer and other small-screen devices.

RSA authentication tokens

  • Why?

A: Using the app and RSA tokens gives Landsbankinn the technical scope to offer more advanced solutions for sign in and confirmation of actions. The app and the authentication token can be used alternately, depending on which suits the occasion better. Using the app is a convenient way to sign in to Corporate Online Banking, since your mobile is usually closer at hand than your authentication token.

  • Do I have to sign a new Online Banking agreement?

A: No, there is no change because of the app or the new token. Customers download the app when it's convenient and activate it themselves without the involvement of bank employees.

  • How do I get the app for my mobile phone?

A: You start with the phone itself. Open the Apple App Store (for an iPhone) or Play Store (for Android phones) and search for the RSA SecurID Software Token app. You install the app on your phone. After that you sign in to Corporate Online Banking in the usual manner and open the webpage RSA Tokens under Settings. There you follow the steps of the activation process as explained in Online Banking.

  • How do I activate the app?

A: The app is activated upon your next login to Corporate Online Banking following the directions on the RSA token page for Settings. This opens an instruction process which you follow in short and simple steps. Note that older Todos authentication tokens cannot be used in tandem with the app. If you want to use both the app and an authentication token you will have to apply for an RSA authentication token at your nearest branch – if you do not already have one.

  • What happens next?

The app is now ready on your phone to be used to sign in to those companies to which you have access in Online Banking. All you need is your user name and password, PIN and the app.

  • Do I need to remember yet another PIN number?

No, you can use the same PIN number as you already use for the Todos token.

  • What types of phones can use the app?

A: The RSA app is available for iPhone and Android and will eventually be available for additional operating systems. Customers with other types of phones are advised to get an RSA plastic token in their nearest Landsbankinn branch as soon as possible.

  • My phone runs on Windows. What should I do?

The iPhone and Android versions of the app have a built-in QR code reader which makes the activation process simpler. While the app does exist for other types of phones (such as those which run on Windows), those versions do not yet include a QR reader. Users with other types of phones are urged to get an RSA token at their nearest branch – or they can activate the app without the QR reader. Landsbankinn will announce apps for additional phone operating systems when they become available.

  • Is this the same PIN number as for the phone itself?

A: No, it is a different PIN number. But of course you may choose to use the same PIN number, although that is not advisable.

  • Do I need a separate app for each company in the group?

A: No, just as with the authentication tokens, one app is used for an unlimited number of companies. For the same reason one PIN number will suffice for all the companies in your group.

  • How much does the app cost?

A: Both the app and the authentication token are free of charge.

  • I have neither an Android phone nor an iPhone - what should I do?

A: Drop into your nearest branch and get an RSA plastic token. You will be provided with one free of charge, but you have to pick it up in person. Tokens cannot be picked up for someone else or delivered by registered mail. Here is a list of all Landsbankinn branches and outlets. The app will be available for additional phone operating systems eventually.

  • Can I use electronic ID in my phone?

A: You will be able to eventually. As yet, however, only customers in Personal Online Banking can use phone ID to sign in.

  • What are the main advantages of the app?

Using the app is a convenient way to sign in to Corporate Online Banking, since your mobile is usually closer at hand than your authentication token. The actual sign-in process is similar to using a traditional authentication token.

  • Is the app secure?

In terms of security the app is neither better nor worse than the plastic token. Its advantage is its convenience.

  • Where else can I use the app?

A large number of banks around the world offer their customers use of the app but Landsbankinn is the first bank in Iceland to co-operate with RSA.

  • Do I need a new SIM card?

No, the app is unrelated to and independent of your SIM card.

  • How does it accord with Landsbankinn's policy of ensuring customers' security that they have to give the app such extensive access to their phones as is provided for in the app's terms and conditions?

This refers to four points included in the terms and conditions of the app. The answer therefore is divided into four sections in the same order as the terms and conditions.

    1. Photos/Media/Files
The is the core of it all and is connected to the encrypted certificate (a so-called SDTID file) which plays the leading role in the set-up process. In this process the app utilises the QR reader which stores the file in your phone to make the set-up process more user-friendly.

    2. Camera
The camera is for the QR reader.

    3. Wi-fi connection information
This is a standardised text version of Google Play. The app is independent of WiFi information as no risk engine operates with the app.

    4. Device ID & call information
Device ID is very important but call information on the other hand is not, as the app does not utilise your call list. This is similar to Point 3, the app store has decided to combine these two things in a single item.
Device ID is used to create code in real time. It ensures that you do not receive the same code on two different phones at exactly the same time.
The app utilises Device ID to check, for instance, whether a new phone (of an unauthorised person) is unexpectedly using the app.

  • What if I change phones?

In such case we would encourage you to delete the app from your previous phone and install the app on your new phone, then activate it in Online Banking.

  • Why does Landsbankinn demand the use of authentication tokens in Corporate Online Banking but not in Personal Online Banking?

Unlike individuals, companies often have their own procedures regarding security arrangements, including using authentication tokens in banks anywhere in the world, regardless of whether the bank utilises a risk engine such as the RSA system. As a result there are few indications to suggest that all companies would like to avoid use of authentication tokens, either in the short or long term. On the other hand, within a few years authentication tokens will be optional for companies banking with Landsbankinn, and customers will then be able to choose for themselves. Until then, authentication tokens will be required.

Risk Analysis

  • Why is the login process now in 2 steps?

A: The aim is to improve security and service. This approach makes it easier for customers to fix typos and harmonises with the Bank's other online solutions.

  • Why are my Online Banking services changing?

A: To make sure that banking services online are as secure as possible we have added new security features. Online Banking will be unchanged for the most part, with the exception of one additional security feature which will operate behind the scenes to protect your access to the bank. The new security feature may occasionally request that you confirm your identity before continuing. It means you can use Online Banking with increased security.

  • How does it increase security to use security questions?

A: Any unauthorised party will have to respond correctly to your security questions or to a phone call to one of the phone numbers you provided before obtaining access to your Online Banking or concluding any fraudulent transactions. The security questions are not the first option and are seldom used unless other routes have not been successful.

  • Does the gathering of this information comply with laws and rules on personal data protection?

A: In this as in every instance, Landsbankinn emphasises protecting personal data. Landsbankinn has no access to the information gathered and no possibility of making use of this data. The data is used exclusively to detect unusual behaviour and to protect Online Banking users – to ensure that banking services online are as secure as possible. Landsbankinn notified its planned data processing to the Data Protection Authority which has raised no objections.

  • What security system is used?

A: As a customer of the bank, you use the Online Banking system in a recognisable manner. If we detect behaviour which deviates from your usual actions we will request that you verify your identity. This will only happen very occasionally. In most cases no additional information will be requested. We may, for instance, request that you confirm that you are actually yourself attempting to obtain access and not someone else, if an attempt is made to sign in with your username and access code from a computer in another country shortly after you have signed out from the computer you usually use at home.

  • How do I obtain access to the security system?

You can expect to be asked by Online Banking to provide additional information. This could include choosing several security questions to which only you know the answers, or providing a phone number where you can be reached while using Online Banking. Doing so places a new checkpoint for your Online Banking access.

  • How much does this cost?

o Landsbankinn makes no charge to customers for using the new security system. However, the bank points out that if a customer uses an Icelandic mobile number abroad and is requested to provide identification for Online Banking by telephone, the telecom networks used will charge for communications according to their tariff.

  • When will additional information be requested?

A: You will only be asked to provide additional details when a certain login appears to be unusual or deviates from your usual behaviour in Online Banking. You will also be requested to enter your details the first time you are requested to provide security information.

  • What additional information will be requested?

If the software detects any behaviour which is unusual or not customary, you will be requested to reply to an automatic phone call. You may also be asked to respond to some of the security questions you selected.

  • What sort of behaviour is considered unusual or not customary?

A: Behaviour is considered unusual or not customary if there is anything about it which does not appear to accord with how and from where you generally carry out Online Banking transactions. If the action requested does not appear to be something you would ordinarily do, you will be asked for further information to verify that it is you and not some other person using Online Banking without permission.

  • How does the discover behaviour which is unusual or not customary?

A: The security system checks on aspects such as what transactions you generally carry out in Online Banking, what computers you generally use for access or what security settings are generally in effect on your computer. Hundreds of aspects such as these create a profile which is unique for you, enabling us to determine whether the person using your online account is actually you.

  • Will I always be asked for further details from now on?

A: No, only when any unusual usage or actions are detected which you would not customarily carry out. In all probability this will seldom happen.

  • How do I know that this works?

A: You only have to set up the security procedure once, after that it functions automatically. But this means that you always enjoy protection – both when you are using Online Banking and, even more importantly, when you are not using it.

  • Will my personal information be secure nonetheless?

A: Yes. Your personal information is more secure than before because we are always checking that no unauthorised person is attempting to gain access to your data.

  • Can I use Icelandic characters in my security questions?

Yes, you can. The system replaces special Icelandic characters when this is necessary: o for ö, a for á etc.

  • What will my phone numbers be used for?

If the software detects any behaviour which is unusual or not customary, you may be requested to reply to an automatic phone call. When you answer the phone you will be requested to enter the code which then appears on your computer screen to identify yourself. Phone numbers will not be sold to third parties or used to contact you with special offers or promotions.

  • How many phone numbers do I have to provide?

There has to be at least one phone number but we encourage you to provide as many as three numbers. If we have to identify you, you might receive an automatic phone call to one of those phone numbers you provided. So it is important to provide a number where you can be reached while you are using Online Banking. For instance, if you use Online Banking at work you should provide your work telephone number or mobile number at work, so you can be reached there. That will ensure that you can continue to use Online Banking without any difficulties.

  • What if I have to change phone numbers?

If you have to change phone numbers you must either change the number in the Online Banking settings, or contact the bank's Customer Service Centre. When you use Online Banking you may now and then receive a request that you confirm your details are correct.

  • What if I can't be reached at any of the phone numbers provided?

If you cannot be reached at any of the numbers you provided you should contact the bank's Customer Service Centre.

  • I have already provided phone numbers where I can be reached, why am I asked for them again?

Occasionally we may ask you to confirm that the information we have is correct, in order to maximise your security and ease of using Landsbankinn's Online Banking.

  • How does this prevent fraud?

If your username and password is stolen, the thief will have to respond correctly to your security questions or to a phone call to one of the phone numbers you provided before obtaining access to your Online Banking or concluding any fraudulent transactions. If the user cannot provide this information, or if he/she cannot be reached by telephone, access will be frozen. Through these additional measures we maximise your security in Online Banking while at the same time making your experience simpler.

  • I use Online Banking often, will I notice if anything unusual is going on there?

It's a very good idea to sign into Online Banking frequently. And it's also advisable to check regularly whether any unusual entries appear on online statements (such as payments which you haven't made). These security measures make it easier to prevent such events from ever occurring and ensure things are what they should be when you check on them.

  • I already have an anti-virus program and private firewall. Why do I need this?

Anti-virus software and private firewalls are highly recommended. Make sure that this software is always updated so that your protection against viruses, Trojan horses and computer hackers is the best possible. These new security measures protect against different kinds of threats, such as stolen usernames and passwords. It functions together with your other security software but does not replace it.
